ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers - Course
OpenAI has introduced “ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers”, an introductory course that helps K–12 educators move from hesitant about AI to confident, practical use of ChatGPT in their daily work.
ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers is available on Coursera
ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers features short, hands-on modules that explain core concepts of how ChatGPT works, how to navigate and personalize the interface, and how to write and refine prompts that produce useful, trustworthy results.
A key focus is real classroom and school workflows: lesson and unit planning, rubric and assignment design, communication with families, feedback to students, and targeted support for diverse learners. Instead of prescribing one correct way to use AI, the course models multiple approaches and encourages teachers to adapt examples to their own subjects, students, and policies.
The course also highlights responsible AI use, emphasizing data privacy, human oversight, and alignment with school rules. In the end, OpenAI beliveves teachers will gain practical strategies, a prompting framework, and concrete examples they can immediately apply to save time and support student learning.
Tom’s Take: ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers comes on the heels of OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT for Teachers, a free, secure version of ChatGPT for verified U.S. K–12 educators through June 2027. With ChatGPT for Teachers and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, OpenAI is attempting to challenge Google’s dominant position in the U.S. K-12 edtech market. Yet, despite ChatGPT’s popularity, OpenAI carries the baggage of having been banned from schools for years due to its lack of concern over student data privacy. Additionally, many other tech and etech organizations offer introductory AI courses for educations, including Google, IBM, CommonSense Education, and others.
