Google’s AI Mode in Search Enables Students to Upload Pictures and Ask Questions

As reported by The Verge, Google’s AI Mode in Search enables image uploads on desktop, allowing users—especially students—to upload pictures (e.g. math problems, diagrams, etc) and ask questions about their content. Google promises support for PDF uploads soon, which would enable AI Mode to analyze document content and related online sources.

The Verge also reports that Google is also Canvas, a dynamic sidebar workspace in AI Mode where users can build multi‑session study plans, quizzes, guides, and more. Furthermore, Google is equipping Search Live with real‑time video input integrated with Google Lens so that you can point your camera at objects and engage in live AI‑driven Q&A.

Tom’s Take: Clearly, these new Google AI Mode features offer convenience and personalization for students. Yet, at the same time, they can lead to superficial learning, and a lack of productive struggle. The onus will fall on teachers to guide student and ensure that these features do not become a crutch for students.
