OpenAI Launches Free ChatGPT for Teachers

OpenAI’s “ChatGPT for Teachers” is a free, secure version of ChatGPT for verified U.S. K–12 educators through June 2027. It gives teachers a private workspace to plan lessons, adapt materials, generate quizzes, and collaborate with colleagues, while school and district leaders get admin controls, FERPA-aligned privacy, and compliance protections for student data. OpenAI also provides an AI Literacy Blueprint to help schools support responsible, teacher-led AI use rather than ad-hoc experimentation.

Tom’s Take: Kudos to OpenAI for introducing a free, FERPA-compliant version with school/district admin controls. One of the main barriers ChatGPT use in schools has been a lack of student privacy. ChatGPT for Teachers is a step towards schools adopting AI responsibly. Yet, it is designed for teachers, not students, and may not be enough for schools/districts to remove bans on student use.
